Outdoor Still Life
Silver in Shade, 12″ x 12″, Oil on panel, © Eric Merrell
Here are a couple of recent still life paintings done outdoors working in different qualities of light; overcast, full sun, shade. If you can find great color, you can paint in any light, on any type of day. Light doesn’t become flat or dull – the quality of it is always changing throughout the day, but it is never uninteresting.

Great color in these. You are right about any type of light being interesting and full of color.
I wish I could see these a little bigger when I click on them.
Thanks for pointing that out, Frank, you’re right. Try them out now, they should have larger files attached. Eric
Nice still lives, beautiful color! Thanks for finding my blog… I’m going to link to this!
Oh yeah. That is much better. You have so much subtle color in there, it helps to see them bigger.
You have great control of your values Eric. Good stuff.
Can’t wait to see a few of these up close.
these glow in a most pleasing way.
Thanks Mary, I love painting still life. These are all painted in my back yard; we have a good amount of flowers and fruit trees growing which provide wonderful material for painting.
